Olympic Games Beijing - Inside the Chinese fur trade
The Animals Asia Foundation together with the Kennel Club UK has tabled an Early Day Motion to provide an opportunity of highlighting the plight of dog and cats in China to MP’s and the UK government. By raising this issue they aim to continue to encourage UK government representatives to speak to their Chinese government counterparts about ending this barbaric practice once and for all.

The details of the Early Day Motion are below.

TITLE: Inhumane treatment of dogs in China
DATE INITIATED: 24/06/2008
PROPOSER: Bob Russell MP (Liberal Democrat)
EDM Number: 1882
SESSION: 2007/2008

That this House supports the joint working of Animals Asia Foundation and the Kennel Club in continuing to highlight the inhumane treatment of dogs in China; is appalled by the acts of extreme cruelty which take place in China’s animal markets; notes that millions of dogs have been skinned alive and killed for fur and meat; condemns the cruel ways in which these animals are raised, transported and slaughtered; calls upon the Government to do everything in its power to encourage the Chinese government to bring about an urgent end to this barbaric practice, including raising the subject with the Chinese Ambassador in the UK; and calls directly on the Chinese government to bring its laws and practices into the 21st century in relation to animal welfare standards.

Please help them gain further political support for this EDM – please email your UK MP by using this website http://www.writetothem.com and ask your MP to sign EDM1882 in support of an end to dog and cat eating in China.

Spain to Italy: Horses transported for 46 hours before slaughter
Millions of animals are suffering unnecessarily at the hands of meat traders by enduring cruel, drawn-out journeys across the world to be slaughtered on arrival. The alarming evidence of their suffering has been revealed after a secret investigation by 10 major animal charities, including the RSCPA, Compassion in World Farming and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). In shocking footage, animals including horses, pigs, sheep and chickens are seen being transported thousands of miles across the world, when they could as easily be carried as meat. [more]

Living in Spain?
Can you help?

We want to get the Spanimal.org message out to all parts of Spain, therefore we need individuals who can spare a few hours each month printing-out and distributing Spanimal flyers to their local veterinary practices, pet shops, libraries, supermarket notice-boards and other public buildings.

Click on the image to view PDF file (115KB) or right click and "save target as" to save to your hard disk.

As Spanimal.org is created and run by volunteers, we offer no pay. However, for those who want to help make a difference to Spain's "unwanted" animal population, we have no doubt that our four-pawed companions extend their gratitude. Please do let us know where you have posted Spanimal flyers in your area.

PETA is calling on Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) to stop using bear pelts to make headpieces for the five guards regiments and to have the hats fashioned from luxurious faux fur instead.

What is Spanimal.org?

Spanimal.org is a bilingual (Spanish version coming shortly, translation volunteers please contact us), online database which has been created to fulfill the urgent need for a central animal adoption network to serve all animal welfare organisations in Spain. With the growth of the internet in Spain, many animal welfare organisations and individuals have embraced the medium both to promote the aims of their organisation and to locate homes for some of Spain's unwanted domestic pets.

Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, most of these organisations and individuals have lacked the resources to develop an automated online animal database and instead, have had to rely on web-savy volunteers to develop basic web sites, frequently having to work within the constraints of free web space provided by internet service providers.

Through the support of TEFL.com, Spanimal.org has developed a state-of-the-art database adoption system which will be available free of charge to all organisations and individuals connected with animal welfare in Spain. We have no plans to accept advertising at Spanimal.org and the site will remain free to all.

How Spanimal.org will work for you...
To enable us to maintain a completely free service, the Spanimal.org system is totally automated. If you are an animal welfare organisation or an individual caring for some of Spain's stray animal population (there is no need for you to be a registered charity), all you need to do is register with us at www.spanimal.org/org/reg.html. You will be issued with your unique password to enable you to access your account.

All you will then need is a digital camera and an internet connection to enable you to upload photographs of the animals in your care along with the relevant information to your Spanimal.org account. As our database is in "real-time", your photographs and data will be published online instantly.

Individuals seeking to adopt a pet, will simply browse the online database for animal welfare centres and animal carers in their locality. They will then make contact with the adoption centre either using the Spanimal.org online enquiry form or by telephone. For privacy, e-mail addresses will not be published.

How is Spanimal.org promoted?
The Spanimal.org resource is promoted extensively via national and international animal welfare websites, Spain tourism and expatriate websites. In addition, we will be publishing a free newsletter featuring photographs and information on the latest animals added to the database.
